Health Services at Jared, Kaghan Valley
A long term facility set up by NUR Foundation’s
collaborating partner, Fatima Memorial System.
Jared is the largest village of Kaghan Valley and
had lost one fourth of its residents and almost all
its houses, in the earthquake. The devastation of
Jared ranks next to that of Balakot. The access to
Jared following the earthquake was extremely
difficult because of massive land slides and
destruction of bridges.
The nearest health care services, for the residents
of Jared, are miles away. Rains, snow and land
slides cut the entire population of Kaghan and Naran
from rest of the province. The Fatima Memorial
System, a collaborating partner of NUR Foundation,
decided to take the challenge of establishing a 24
hours functional hospital in Jared. The initial
funding was provided by Asia Foundation through the
recommendations of Pakistan Centre of Philanthropy
(PCP).
The aim was to set up a family-physician centered
health facility with outreach through community
health workers. The infrastructure which includes
the Health Centre building, residence for Medical
Officers and the necessary equipment and fixtures
has been established. Services of two medical
officers are available to the project along with
back-up from the tertiary care teaching Fatima
Memorial Hospital (FMH). This centre will be
completing its successful third year on August 14,
2009.
