Earthquake Relief in
NWFP: 2005 to 2009
FMS-NUR was amongst the first organizations to respond with a relief and rehabilitation efforts for victims who suffered in the tragic earthquake which struck northern Pakistan in 2005. FMS-NUR received a certificate of commendation in this regard from the Government of Pakistan. Key elements of the relief and rehabilitation efforts included:
Medical Relief through a team of 83 doctors, nurses and paramedical staff from Fatima Memorial Hospital and its affiliated colleges of Nursing, Medicine and Dentistry. Fatima Memorial was one of the first hospital to arrive in Abbottabad during the acute phase, equipped with a team of Trauma specialists, Orthopedic surgeons, General and Thoracic surgeons, Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgeons, Pediatric Surgeons, Gynecologists, Anaestheologists, Nurses and Paramedical Staff. These team members served with all the strength of their hands, hearts and souls, to relieve the agony of their brothers and sisters in distress.

Medical care along with medicines were dispensed
by our relief team through a network of
hospitals in Abbottabad: CMH Abbottabad,
District Headquarters Hospital, Women’s and
Children’s Hospital, Ayub Medical Complex and
Gillani Hospital Abbottabad;

A field team headed by a specialist in family
medicine provided medical care through a mobile
dispensary to patients in Balakot and Jared;

Immediate medical care to over 2000 patients and
perform over 1100 surgeries;

Provision of food, clothing, tents, blankets,
quilts, shawls, sweaters and shoes to quake
affectees in Hazara Division;

On October 19, Fatima Memorial Hospital also
constructed a temporary ward on the premises of
CMH Abbottabad which operates till today as a
50 bedded permanent ward;

Our relief efforts led FMS-NUR to provide long
term health care the affected population in
village Jared (40 km from Balakot), and a
mini-hospital has been set up in Jared which
continues to operate to 2009.
